Why is there a plastic wrap on the wheat fibre lunchbox?

Unfortunately, due to risk of damage in transit we currently needed to shrink wrap the wheat fibre lunchboxes for shipping. We are working with our factory to find an alternative solution that uses less plastic and hope to solve this issue for upcoming deliveries.

It was a tough decision to make, as we are focussed on delivering less plastic into the environment.

What is Wheat Fibre?

Wheat fibre/straw is the stalk left over after wheat grains are harvested. Traditionally, it has been treated as a waste and in some countries, farmers burn it, contributing to air pollution and creating a public health hazard. However, these stalks still have value and can made into a natural polymer, which can then be used to make a bioplastic used in the manufacture of products like our lunchbox and other items.

The wheat fibre in the current edition of our lunchboxes has been combined with polypropylene to make then more durable. We are working with our factory to improve the wheat straw and biodegradable content of this lunchbox.

With all our products our focus is on continuous improvement. We continue to look for improvements in current materials and better alternatives. Every little bit counts. Learn more about Wheat Fibre.

What are the bamboo lunchboxes and tableware made of?

Both the lunchboxes and tableware are made using bamboo fibre. Bamboo fibres are a sturdy, reusable and sustainable material that is biodegradable and free of toxic ingredients. Bamboo needs very little water to grow and there is no BPA used in the creation of the lunchbox range. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth, making it a sustainable and renewable form of material.

The bamboo fibre is mixed with corn starch and a combination of melamine and/or food resin to help give the base of the lunchbox and tableware its shape.

The lid is made from natural, solid rolled bamboo, which is secured by a food grade safe silicone band.

What is borosilicate glass?

Borosilicate glass is a special kind of glass which incorporates two chemicals in high concentration: boron trioxide and silica. These safe and environmentally friendly chemicals make borosilicate glass more durable and heat resistant than other forms of glass on the market.

Borosilicate glass can go straight from the freezer to the oven without cracking.

Where are your products made?

Our Eco-Warrior range is designed in New Zealand and manufactured in our partner factories in China.

Our factories are highly audited – these audits, as well as other inspections ensure quality products as well as employees are paid fairly and work in safe conditions.

Why is there a silica packet in the glass containers?

Natural bamboo can be susceptible to moisture during transit. We wanted to make sure your containers reach you in the best condition possible, so a silica packet was included in each container. Silica gel packs absorb and hold water.

Don’t throw these little gems away, they can be used for lots of other purposes including:

  • Preventing rust in your toolbox

  • Protecting electronics – put one in your camera or laptop bag.

  • Freshening up your gym bag – a few packets in the bottom of your bag will help absorb moisture and smell.

  • Preserving treasured memories, important documents

  • Defog your windscreen – a few packets on your dashboard will absorb some of the excess moisture.
